In other words, about 30% less than they cost 2 to 3 years ago. But the worst may be yet to come what will
happen when banks begin to auction these same flats and building plots that the promoters have not sold, and
that is detrimental to the accounts of the financial institutions. This story is not new, as happened in the crisis of
91, and other crises, but on this occasion it has been speculated that the situation will be much worse.
It seems that our politicians have not been able to foresee this situation. It seems that their greatest concern has
been involved in a frantic race to see who will be first to be made rich. It seems that corruption has been
widespread. And what doesn't seem to have happened, although it should be obvious, is that despite the
economic boom of construction, the coffers of the municipalities have been squeezed as much as ever, just like,
for example Torrevieja, La Vila and Altea with record breaking debts in the millions.
But what is even more outrageous is that there are still some characters and politicians in Altea seeking to
blame this crisis on those who have spoken out so much against this pattern of growth.
It is a shining example of what could be described as political cynicism, because they know perfectly well that this
crisis affects the whole country, even to the west, and that it has nothing to do with a change in local politics,
among other things, because it is not derived from a political decision, but the decimation of the market itself.
And now, there are some that suggest we should leave everything prepared for another boom period, and that
this would put us in a better position for another crazy race on the same basis.
How many times must we be beaten withe same stick?
This crisis in the market also has its positive side, because political action would have been much slower and
less effective in preserving this ancient land from the ravages to which he has been subjected in the last five
years.
Without the pressure of greed, there is the serenity of wisdom. Now, every political pledge must include
appropriate measures to ensure that situations such as those experienced in the past do not reoccur. In Altea
the General Urban Plan is going to be revised , and we have an opportunity to choose our growth model.
Above all, we must look for alternative ways to benefit the people of Altea as a whole rather than some specific
companies or individuals. This is why we should advocate very restrictive growth in construction. The land is
exhausted, it is not infinite, the builder will someday find that there is no land to build. And when the prime areas
have all been used, who can we blame for unemployment in the construction industry? In the end, the
municipality is like an island, it is limited territory, and whatever we lose, be it orchard, mountain or field will be
forever, and there is so little space left. Carlos Moro
Construct or Destroy:
continues from previous page
In the middle of the town, a town which has seen Iberians, Romans, Phoenicians and Muslims and which received in 1705 Archduke Charles of Austrias’ navy; in this unique and picturesque town, bordering it’s oldest street, and surrounded by gardens brimming with nísperos and citrus fruti trees, a six storey building is being constructed which, completly destroys the harmony of the environment. It could not be worse, and it has caused Altea la Vella to revolt. Vincent Ripoll, the supporting mayor, is concerned about the number of complaints he has received about this legacy of the previous government team. But is it legal? The license, granted by the municipal government of the ex mayor Miguel Ortiz was in accordance with the PGOU. Now the new incumbants are preparing the groundwork for a conservation plan for the old town of Altea la Vella, and has begun the revision of the PGOU. If others had done this before, we would have avoided this monstrosity, which will forever overshadow the beauty of little Altea la Vella, and stand, rudely marking an era of destruction of the beautiful environment. Would we be able, together, to make a collection to compensate the developer, and change the developement?
